'Benedict XVI may attend double canonization ceremony'

Hundreds of thousands expected on April 27, says Vatican

(ANSA) - Vatican City, March 31 - Former Pope Benedict XVI may attend a ceremony for the canonization of popes John Paul II and John XXII on April 27, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Monday. "Clearly there is a certain expectancy. He has been invited of course, but there is still a month to go. It remains a possibility", he said.

Holy See organizers expect hundreds of thousands will flock to the double canonization, he added. "We don't have exact the numbers, but everyone should feel free to come. The entrance is free, no tickets required", Father Lombardi said.

Pope Francis last July signed a decree to make saints of his two most popular recent predecessors. Their impact on the Catholic Church and charismatic leadership may be rivalled, according to some, by the new pontiff. Francis was elected last spring following the shock resignation of Benedict, who announced in February 2013 that he did not feel fit enough to continue the job.
