Police seize two tonnes of cocaine in mafia operation

24 arrested after year-long probe

(ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, March 20 - Police arrested 24 people Thursday as a part of a probe into international drug trafficking by southern Italy's 'Ndrangheta mafia syndicate in an operation that saw two tonnes of cocaine seized.
The drugs were seized in Italy and other European countries during the course of the year-long investigation. 'Ndrangheta, based in the southern Calabria region, has replaced Sicily's Cosa Nostra as Italy's richest and most powerful mafia, thanks to its domination of the European cocaine trade. It has invested its drug profits in the legitimate economy of central and northern Italy.
