Venice Biennale to open in May, a month earlier than usual next year, and fairs may move to avoid a clash
The
Venice Biennale will open earlier than usual next year, running from
9 May to 22 November, with previews for the 56th International Art
Exhibition, curated by Okwui Enwezor, expected to take place 6 to 8
May.
The
move means that the world’s oldest and most prestigious biennial
could clash with the Frieze New York fair which launches its VIP
preview this year on 8 May (the fair runs 9-12 May). A spokeswoman
for Frieze New York says: “We haven’t finalised the 2015 dates
yet, but we’re aware of the potential crunch points in the calendar
next year and are looking to make a decision in the forthcoming
weeks.”
Previous editions of the biennial have opened just before Art Basel, which is scheduled for 18 to 21 June next year. Moving the exhibition’s dates a month earlier means that dealers, collectors and curators will not have to endure the usual summer art marathon travelling from Venice to the Swiss fair.
Last week, Art Basel also announced that the 2015 edition of its fair in Hong Kong will be moved from May to March—VIP previews will run over two days, 13-14 March, while the general public will be admitted 15-17 March. The move means that the key Asian fair avoids the impending bottleneck.
